Rectal Care
Rectal Care Instructions- Avoid constipation or constipating foods, i.e. foods such as cheeses, meats, starches, etc.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages, spicy foods, or fatty foods.
- Avoid nuts, seeds, and kernel corn.
- Increase fluid intake with juices or water.
- Avoid straining to have a bowel movement. Wait until there is a natural urge, but don't delay once the urge occurs.
- Do not rub, itch, or heavily wash rectal area. Keep area clean and dry.
- Begin a high fiber diet.
- Soak in a tub full of very warm (not burning hot) water mixed with ½ cut of Epsom Salts.
- Carefully dry the rectal area with a patting towel motion or a hair dryer set on low or warm.
- Apply medication to outside and inside rectum three times daily and after each bowel movement. Analpram HC 1% or 2.5%. Nupercainal Ointment
- Avoid prolonged standing, sitting, walking, or exercise until the acute pain and swelling is over. Then, regular exercise is helpful to avoid constipation.
- Use Metamucil 1 tablespoon or 1 packet with 8-10 ounces of fluid one, two or three times daily until bowel movements are soft and easy to pass. You may substitute Metamucil Wafers/Capsules, Citrucel, or a generic brand of psyllium seed. Other similar bulk forming products including FiberCon or Fiberall tablets. Be sure and drink extra fluid with these medications.
- Use a stool softener (Colace, Senokot).
